Vittoriosa – Inquisitors Palace and Maritime Museum

Online since: 09. April 2013

Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa

Vittoriosa is one of the Three Cities of Cottonera, the other two being Senglea and Cospicua. Directly opposite Valletta, at the Grand Harbour, you will find some remains of the era of the knight orders and the British Empire.

Inquisitors Palace

From the 16th to the 18th century, this palace served as office of the Apostolic Delegation and is the only preserved inquisitor’s palace in Europe. It accommodates a collection of sacred artefacts, as well as special collections themed “Jesus”“ and “Holy Week”. It is also possible to see the dungeons, where once the victims of the holy inquisition were kept prisoner.

Duration approximately 60 minutes.

Maritime Museum

In the expertly-designed exhibition of the museum, you can learn about the history of shipping and of the navy in the Mediterranean region. The exhibition consists mainly of paintings and models that pertain chronologically to certain events. A special highlight is the complete steam engine of the Anadrian, built in 1951/52.

And here ends our journey into Malta’s history. If you would like to learn more about Malta’s culture, please see our website for more information, but after this tour, everyone will have at least a basic knowledge of Maltese-Mediterranean history.
