Maltese Cuisine

Maltese Cuisine

The most typical Maltese dish is probably rabbit, which is prepared in many different ways . Another somewhat peculiar speciality, at least to the Europeans, are singing birds . Regardless of what you eat, though, it will go down best with a bottle of one of the delicious local wines.

We also highly recommend a “Maltese platter”, if you would like to taste the local delicacies. It comes with rabbit shank, sun dried tomatoes, strong goat’s cheese from Gozo and tuna-filled olives with a tuna dip. Another traditional dish is “Bigilla ” - a mash made of tic beans. It is usually eaten as a spread or served as a dip. Snails are also often found on platters. This may be a bit unusual for some European palates, but they actually taste similar to mushrooms.

As Italy is just a stone’s throw away, many Italian dishes can be found on a typical Maltese menu.
