Meridiana Wine Estate.

Meridiana’s roots date back to 1985 as a result of a conversation between Mark Miceli-Farrugia, a trader in wines for over 20 years, and a Bordeaux oenologist. The latter persuaded Mark that there was potential for high quality wine production in Malta. As a result, Merdiana Wine Estate was established in April 1987 under the counsel of a Maltese oenologist who had studied in Germany.

Meridiana’s mission is to produce ‘World-Class Wines of Maltese Character’ – internationally acclaimed wines made from wine-grapes grown exclusively in Maltese soil. The name Meridiana and the estate’s sundial insignia have been inspired by Malta’s Southern European location.

Meridiana Wine Estate. In 1989, on the strength of successful experimentation with different grape varities and rootstocks, a 19-hectare (47 acre) site was acquired at Ta’Qali, Malta’s agricultural heartland. The estate lies scenically below Malta’s old capital, the ancient walled city city of Mdina. In 1992, Mark’s financial and technological partnership with MarchesePieroAntinori helped overcome local financial institutions’ reservations to this pioneering initiative. MarcheseAntinori descends from the oldest extablished winemaking family in the world (1385) and brings with him a wealth of experience acquired in Tuscany (Italy) and the New World.

Meridiana Wine Estate The Ta’Qali wine estate was planted in 1994 and 1995 with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. All 91,000 vines on the estate are drip irrigated. A picturesque, purpose-built winery was completed in 1996, contructed from the characteristic, local, chalk-coloured limestone. State-of-the-art, individually temperature-controlled, stainless steel vessels are set within an air conditioned processing area. The winery’s underground cellars have a capacity of approx 45,000 litres of wine (200 barriques) and has a natural temperature of 18-22 degrees Celsius.

The first harvest of a limited quantity of red and white wines took place in 1995 and 1996 respectively, with the first release of both wines being sold out within weeks. Since then, despite the annual increase in vine yields, domestic demand has been ever growing and Meridiana has made agreements with local farmers to acquire their locally grown grapes. Currently Meridiana produces approximately 140,000 bottles of premium wines, most of which sell in restaurants around Malta and Gozo. A limited quota is reserved for export to select markets. Meridiana’sportfolio is currently composed of nine labels - Isis (Chardonnay of Malta), Astarte (Vermentino of Malta), Melqart (Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot of Malta) Bel (Syrah of Malta), Nexus (Merlot of Malta) and Celsius Reserve (Cabernet Sauvignon of Malta). The Fenici range consists of the Fenici White (Vermentino&Viognier of Malta), the Fenici Red (Syrah & Merlot of Malta) and the Fenici Rose.
