Hiking in Malta

At first sight, the islands don’t look like a hiker’s paradise, especially not in summer. From the end of October, however, once the first rain falls at the end of a long, hot summer, nature starts to blossom again. While a saturnine winter reigns in many parts of Europe, the Maltese islands are covered in a lush green. There are about 1000 different species of wild flower, including rare orchids, most of which bloom throughout the winter months.

Leave the cities and tourist areas behind you and discover the stunning natural landscape, small, isolated villages, fertile valleys and hidden bays. Let the wonderfully bizarre coastal formations, the breathtakingly steep cliff faces, the glow of the honey-coloured rocks and the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea enchant you.

There are no signposted hiking trails in Malta and Gozo, but you can just wander off on small paths used by farmers and hunters, or simply hike cross-country along the coast. Of course, you need to make sure you do not trespass on private property. It’s best to join a guided hike.
