Rock Climbing in Malta

In Malta, there are more than 1200 climbing routes. Each route can be easily reached by car in no more than half an hour from any point on the island. Depending on the season, you can decide for yourself whether you want to climb in the blazing midday heat or in the cool shade. It is also possible to climb during the winter, as it is so mild. Some small animals live in the rocks, but none of them are venomous. The rock is limestone, and over the years, the rain has formed very interesting shapes out of this rock. After a rain shower, limestone takes about an hour to dry out.

There are no mountains in Malta - the highest point is 253 metres above sea level - but the variety and beauty of the climbing regions are simply breath-taking. The rugged coastline offers numerous climbing possibilities. There are single and multi pitch routes on steep faces and comfortable plateaus, as well as traverses directly above the water, and deep-water solos, where you can let yourself fall into the blue sea to cool down in the hot summer months. Inland, there are picturesque valleys (called widien in Maltese) with boundaries offering single pitch routes in hard limestone. You can also find interesting outcrops, which are often dotted with caves. Some of the boulders are real challenges even for the bravest climber. You can climb either traditional routes (which have to be safeguarded by the guide himself) or sport climbing routes, prepared with bolts.

Famous climbers such as Patrik Edlinger, Stevie Haston, John Dunne, Crispin Waddie, Garry Gibson and Somone Moro have climbed in Malta! Whether you are a beginner, an advanced climber or a pro, you will find the right level of difficulty for you. At the moment, the most difficult tour on Malta is an E7 6c (French 8a, USA 5.13v, UIAA X). All routes have been evaluated to ensure that even inexperienced climbers can find the right route to suit them.
