Sailing in Malta

The enthusiasm among tourists for yachting around Malta is very strong, and is still growing. Landing stages can be found in the old marina in Msida/TaXbiex, in Portomaso (St. Julian’s), in the Dockyard Creek at the Grand Harbour (Vittoriosa/Birgu) and at Manoel Island in the Marsamxett Harbour.

The largest and most magnificent yachts anchor in Larrezzo Creek at Manoel Island. In Gozo, the marina of Mgarr has over 100 moorages.

With a coastline of 140 km, this archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, comprising the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, is ideal for sailing. The islands offer many isolated bays with crystal-clear water that are perfectly suitable for anchoring, even overnight. The water around Malta is said to be the cleanest in the Mediterranean Sea.

The consistent wind of 8 – 17 mph is optimal for cruising.

The Maltese coast has two different faces. In the north, the land drops flat down to the sea, whereas in the south and west, steep cliff faces with a height of up to 100 metres soar up into the sky. Between these cliffs, you will find protected bays.

A trip to the island of Comino is an absolute must. This small island lies between Malta and Gozo and is almost uninhabited; there are only two hotels. The most beautiful bay, the Blue Lagoon, is located right here.
