Attard (attart), with 9,500 inhabitants (census 2005), lies in the centre of Malta and borders on Birkirkara and the conurbation in the east. The village was founded in 1575. Locally, the three villages of Attard, Lija and Balzan are often called “three villages”, a clear reference to the “three cities”.

The Sant Anton Palace, erected by Grand Master Antoine de Paule from 1623 to 1626, is situated in Attard. Since 1974, it has been the official residence of Malta’s president. Many tropical trees grow in the gardens of the complex, which are open to the public. These were planted when the palace was the summer residence of the British governor. It also contains a small zoo. Right next to it is the 5-star Corinthia Palace Hotel. In the centre of Attard is the church of Santa Marija, built in 1613 by Tumas Dingli (Tomasso Dingli) in the renaissance style of the time; its sculpture decoration is worth a special mention. The church tower was built in 1718. The small museum next to the church is open on Sundays.
