Birkirkara is Malta’s largest city, with a population of 21,775 (census 2005). It is located in the centre of the small conurbation on the east coast of Malta, surrounded by Msida, Pieta and Hamrun to the east, San Gwann (including San Gwann Industrial Estate) and Naxxar to the north, Attard to the west and Qormi to the south.

Next to Birkirkara are the new “Mater Dei Hospital” and the University of Malta (UoM). Many retail shops established themselves along the main streets crisscrossing Birkirkara. In the Triq Dun Karm (“Triq” is Maltese for street), there is a large Vodafone outlet store and in the Triq Il-Kbira San Guzepp is a GO outlet store (also a mobile/landline/internet provider). A sports shop, a shopping mall and several smaller shops can also be found in the Triq Il-Kbira. At the roundabout, where the streets Triq Il-Kbira, Triq In-Naxxar and Triq Dun Karm intersect, are a Smart (large supermarket), JP (textile shop), Ta Lira (discount store for everything) and several smaller shops (also for furniture/kitchenware). In the Triq Il-Wied Ta L-Imsida is a designer furniture store. In the south of the city, close to the Mriehel Bypass, several industrial businesses are located, including Simon Farsons Brewery and a hardware store. There is also now a Lidl in Santa Venera.
