Paola and Tarxien

Online since: 09. April 2013

Paola is located in the southeast part of the conurbation of the east coast, right next to Tarxien. In Paola, you can visit the hypogeum of Hal Saflieni, a subterranean cave system. It was discovered by chance in 1905 and explored for four years. If you would like to visit the cave system, it is best to book in advance, as only a few tours, with small groups, take place every day. Tickets are sold out weeks in advance, especially in summer.

In the centre of Paola, you’ll find several places to shop as well as the church of “Christ the King”. In the north is a mosque. Further north is an industrial area and the Grand Harbour. The docks lie in the French Creek.

In Tarxien, you can see the Tarxien temples, a temple complex from the megalithic period (roughly 3000 – 2500 BC). The discovery of the complex was also a coincidence. A farmer complained about several large rocks he had found and an archaeologist, having heard about it, started a 5-year excavation in 1914. A special finding was the lower body of a woman, who was presumably a fertility goddess.
