Santa Venera

Online since: 09. April 2013

Santa Venera is located southeast of Birkirkara. Bordering towns are Hamrun to the south and Marsa, Pieta and Msida to the east. The number of inhabitants is 6,300 (census 2005). The aqueduct, built in 1610 by Maltese-born Giovanni Attard, under the command of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, is one of the towns main attractions. It stretches from Mdina (the former capital of Malta) to Valletta. Nowadays, however, only some parts still exist. The Casa Leoni, also known as House of Lions due to the lion sculptures at the entrance, is also worth a visit. It is an 18th-century villa that served as the country residence of the Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena (1722-1736). The garden offers geometric paths, small ponds and fountains.

Due to its central location, Santa Venera offers several shops, including a recently opened Lidl supermarket. The main road of Malta, which runs directly through the town, offers a good connection to other towns.
