Senglea (L-Isla)

Online since: 09. April 2013

Vedette in Senglea on Malta

The peninsula of Senglea (L-Isla) lies southwards of Valletta in the Grand Harbor. On the left side of the peninsula there is the French Creek in which there are also the docks with the huge cranes. On the other side is the Dockyard Creek and Vittoriosa (Birgu). In the south of Senglea is Cospicua (Bormla).

Senglea was founded by the Grand Master ‘De La Sengle‘ in the year of 1551. From him the city also got its name: Senglea.

A huge gate opens the path into the city of Cospicua (Bormla). At the entry of Senglea lies the Fort St. Michael, which had an important role during the Great Siege of 1565.

The main road ‘Triq il-Vittorja‘ (Victory Street) as well as the church ‘Madonna tal- Vittorja‘ remember over the great victory of the Turks.

Senglea TownThe original Parish Church (Madonna tal- Vittorja) was built in 1743. However, it was destroyed during a strong attack in the World War II (1941). The new church was completely reconstructed in 1957.

In front of the church stands a monument which is dedicated to the victims of the Second World War.

The other church of the city, St. Philips Neri Church, was built in 1662. It is located close to the tip of the peninsula.

From there a small alley on the right side leads to an observation platform with a small garden.

Senglea Main StreetOn the very tip of the peninsula is the ‘Vedette‘. The Maltese name is gardjola. The Vedette is a small observation tower. On the Vedette one can find two eyes, two ears and a crane - these signs should reflect the watchfulness of the knights. The Latin inscription says that the inhabitants of the city can live in peace, because this tower stands on guard against every intruder who tries to approach the Maltese shores.

From the observation platform you almost get a 360° view on the Grand Harbor. Especially the neighbor peninsula Vittoriosa (Birgu) and Valletta can be seen very well.

In front of the observation platform there is a small stairwell which leads to a calm and very comfortable terrace with benches.

A wonderful way to finish the day off!
