Valletta - Capital City of Malta

Online since: 09. April 2013

Valletta in Malta

Valletta (7100 inhabitants) is a unique city. She lies on a peninsula in western Malta. The city possesses enormous fortification. The building of the city started in 1566 and was finished only 10 years after. Named after the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Vallette.

It was the first city which was fully planned on the drawing board. There are no turnings in the whole city, because the whole city was designed as a reticule. The size of the city measures only 1500 x 800 meters and from almost every spot you can see the sea.

Republic Street in VallettaCity Tour

To discover the city it is best to go around on foot since most of the busses go or pass through Valletta, so they will bring you to the front of the entrance gate.

After passing the gate, there is a tourist information centre on the right side which helps you to get information about the various places worth visiting in Malta. In order to get to know the capital city a bit better it is helpful to rent an audio guide (From Archeology Museum in Republic Street= main road) which leads you in 24 steps through the whole city. Independently you can walk around while listening to the information (available in different languages).

St. Johns Co-Cathedral is by far worth visiting as well. Any required information will be given to visitors at the entrance via an audio guide (included in the entrance fee) Also interesting is the Grandmasters Palace Armoury Museum close by. It exhibits the numerous armory from different eras beginning from the medieval times.

Theatre in VallettaShopping

Valletta is a big shopping mall. Especially jewelry and cloth, but also other stuff are sold. The main street is full of shops, every single house is used as a shop. The street is almost all the time full of peole, only during the Siesta(12 - 4pm) and after 7pm, when all the shops are closing, is the street getting empty.

Market in Valletta

Every day there is a market in Valletta. On the market things like cloth, smaller hardware, music-cds, movies (DVDs), souvenirs, baked goods, etc. are offered. The market takes place every morning from 7 to 12.30 o´clock.
