Victoria on Gozo

Victoria (Rabat) is the capital of Gozo. It received its name from the British commander of the island, Otto Bayer, who named the town (known until then by its Arabic name, Rabat) after Britain’s Queen Victoria, the “Victorious One”, in celebration of her fiftieth on the throne in 1897. Although the town’s official name is now Victoria, people still call it Rabat.

Victoria has 6,000 inhabitants and is thus the largest town on Gozo.

Citadelle in VictoriaIn the 16th century, Knights of the Order had a citadel erected in the centre of Victoria, which offers a magnificent view of the entire island. You can even see the neighbouring island of Comino . The fortress accommodates government and court buildings, a prison, a cathedral and residential houses. The cathedral, which includes the bishop’s palace, is still in good condition, and stands grandly behind the main entrance gate. There is also the cathedral museum and the former court. The cathedral is an achievement of Lorenzo Gafa, who also built the magnificent cathedral in Mdina.
