The town of Zabbar (sab-bar) has 14,500 inhabitants (census 2005) and lies to the east of Malta. It is surrounded by the Three Cities: Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua) and L-Isla (Senglea) to the north, Tarxien to the west, Zejtun to the south and Marsakala to the east.

On the road coming from Paola stands the Hompesch Gate, a triumph arch built by the German Grand Master of the Order of St. John (Ferdinand von Hompesch) in 1797/1798.To this day, the Grand Master’s coat of arms is carried in processions. In the centre, lies the parish church “Madonna tal Grazzja”. Villagers started the construction in 1641, but it was completed only 50 years later. The church’s famous facade was added in 1738 and paid for by the Order of St. John. The present dome of the church was renovated in 1928, as the previous dome had been hit by a cannonball, when the French invaded Malta in 1798. Behind the church, the Sanctuary Museum is located (business hours: Sat and Sun 9.30 am – 12.30 pm). It is said the inhabitants of Zabbar are very hotheaded during political discussions.
