Zurrieq

Online since: 09. April 2013

The town of Zurrieq (surri) lies in the southwest of Malta and, with 8,800 inhabitants (census 2005), is a medium-sized Maltese town. It has two churches, namely those of Santa Katerina (from the 17th century) and Madonna tal-Karmnu. For that reason, the town’s inhabitants are split into two parties. During the annual festivals, the parties try to trump each other with their firework displays. Sadly, this sometimes ends in a mass brawl. Tourists shouldn’t comment on it or take sides.

South of the town lies Wied iz-Zurrieq, a small fjord, from where boats leave for the Blue Grotto (subject to a charge). The Blue Grotto lies only a few hundred metres away. The Maltese also call it Tat il-Hnejja, meaning "under the arch". The arch, which is about 25 m high, is a spectacle that shouldnt be missed, especially when the sun is out, making the water look beautiful. It’s definitively worth a visit!
