Entering Malta with a Pet

Online since: 09. April 2013

Cat in Malta

Strict requirements apply to animals entering Malta. The following information is meant to give you some overview of the requirements, but you should talk to your vet all the same, and get detailed information. We believe that the following information is accurate, but will not accept any responsibility for it.

Cats and Dogs

To ensure the hassle-free entry of your cat or dog into Malta, the following requirements have to be met. If they are not, entry can be denied or the animal can be quarantined.

The following conditions apply to pets coming from other EU countries. Furthermore, these conditions also apply for the following countries:

Andorra, Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Ascension Island, Australia, Bahrain, Barbados, Belarus, Bermuda, BES Islands (Bonair, Sant Eustatius and Saba), Bosnia-Herzegovina, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Croatia, Curacao, Falkland Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Iceland, Jamaica, Japan, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mexico, Monaco, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Norway, Russian Federation, Saint Maarten, San Marino, Singapore, St. Helena, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Pierre & Miquelon, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, USA (mainland), Vanuatu, Vatican State, Wallis & Futuna
The conditions:

  1. Application for the pet’s travel 00356 21650393
    or by email: petstravel.mrra@gov.mt
    Fax: 00356 21650273

    Address:
Ministry for Resources & Rural Affairs
    Agriculture & Fisheries Regulation Department
    Veterinary Regulation Directorate
    Albertown
    Marsa
    Malta

  2. The animal has to have an EU passport (pet passport).

  3. A microchip must have been implanted (Note: Microchip and EU passport are directly linked, as the number of the animal’s EU passport and the number saved in the microchip are the same.)

  4.  The dog must have had the following vaccinations:
    1. Anti-rabies inoculation (Important: The anti-rabies inoculation should take place after implanting the microchip.)
    2. Tick treatment and treatment against dog tapeworm (praziquantel). (Note: Both treatments have to take place between 24 and 120 hours before entering Malta and have to be confirmed by the vet.)
    3. Vaccinations against canine distemper, hepatitis, canine parvovirosis, kennel cough and leptospirosis (Note: All these vaccinations are normally administered in one shot.).
    4. Important: A minimum of 21 days must pass between the vaccinations and entering the country.

Entering Malta from a Non-EU country that is not listed above:

In addition to the above-mentioned conditions, a titre test (blood test to determine the number of antibodies against rabies for cats and dogs) has to be carried out, and must take place at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. The animal can enter Malta only 3 months after passing the test.

If the animal doesn’t have an EU passport, an official document from the vet / animal clinic is required confirming the microchip, the vaccination and the blood test.
Please confirm all information with the ministry in Malta.

Application for the pet’s travel: 00356 21650393
or by email: petstravel.mrra@gov.mt

Consequences of Violation:
Should the above-mentioned requirements not be met, the animal will be quarantined for 6 months (to the best of our knowledge this condition has now changed, as it used to be only 30 days or less) in the quarantine station in Luqa. As this condition changes now and then, and we cannot be 100 % certain about the exact situation; it’s best to enquire for yourself at Malta Veterinary Services, Albertown Marsa (same contact details as above).

Cost of the Quarantine:
The quarantine is obviously not free. The price for keeping a medium-sized dog in quarantine stands at around 5 - 6 Euros per day (addendum on 27.02.2013: the price should be higher by now). That will quickly accumulate and become quite expensive.

Rabbits
As far as we know, no entry conditions for rabbits exist. Nonetheless, we recommend that you confirm this information with your vet.

* All information on this site is subject to change. We kindly ask you to confirm the information personally with your vet before travelling to Malta. The entry requirements are so strict, as Malta is a rabies-free country.
