Schools and Education for Children of Immigrants

Online since: 09. April 2013

Parents can decide whether they want to send their child to a state, Christian or private school. The demand for Christian and private schools is relatively high. At schools run by the Church, the student’s entrance is decided upon by voting, and at private schools an application months before the beginning of the school year is necessary.

The school system is divided into three areas:

  1. Primary education (ages 5 – 11, obligatory)
  2. Secondary education (ages 11 – 16, obligatory)
  3. Tertiary education

International Schools and Kindergartens in Malta

There are three large international schools in Malta. The Verdala International School is the largest, and offers education from kindergarten to the International Baccalaureate (A-level). The school follows the American school system. More information on the school can be found on our page Verdala International School.

Furthermore, there is St. Edward’s College for boys, where students are taught according to the British curriculum, and the QSI International School of Malta, a private school in Mosta that was opened in 2007. Some Maltese schools, such as De La Salle College in Cottonera, St Aloysius College in Birkirkara, the Sacred Heart School in St. Julians and St. Dorothys in Mdina, are also quite popular among expats. There is an even larger offer for younger children. Each municipality has its own kindergartens and primary schools. You’ll find a list of all international kindergartens at http://www.searchmalta.com/dir/Education/Schools/Kindergarden___Primary/index.shtml.

More information on education, especially on higher education (colleges, internationally accepted schools, University of Malta etc.), as well as language schools in Malta and Gozo can be found at Education in Malta (internal link).
