Festival in Malta

The Maltese love to celebrate their public holidays excessively. There is a big festival on the island each month, which puts the entire population in a flurry. In addition, there are many small celebrations and often no one knows anymore why they are even taking place! Everyone participates in the organisation and in the big celebration itself. Many celebrations are related to the Church, as the Maltese are very religious.

February/March

Carnival: Week with events in various locations; main event takes place in Valletta.

End of February

Malta Marathon: Since 1986, the international marathon at the end of February/beginning of March is one of the island’s sport highlights.

April

Gozo-Malta Triathlon

29/30 April

Malta Fireworks Festival at the Grand Harbour near Valletta.

June to September

Fairs: Each village in Malta and Gozo has its own patron saint, and they celebrate the name day with a big festival on the following weekend.

23 June

St. Johns Bonfires: Fireworks at the patron saint festival of St. Johns Co-Cathedral in Valletta, according to the old traditions of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.

July

Malta Jazz Festival: Open-air in Valletta and Floriana.

July

Beach Volleyball Open in Golden Beach.

July and August

High season for sailing regattas organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Viking Sailing Club.

September

Start of the horse races at the Race Track in Marsa. The season lasts for 36 weeks.

8 September

Victory Day (Festival “Lady of the Victories”) (Jum il-Vitorja) – the previous evening, there is a festival on the peninsula Vittoriosa (Three cities). The following day, a small regatta takes place in Grand Harbour.

October

In Birgu, there is a festival with processions (Birgu Festival).
Beginning of the theatre season in Valletta and Victoria/Rabat (Gozo). It lasts until the end of May.

Mdina Festival: historic costumes and parades.

November

Malta International Choir Festival in Valletta.
