Worth seeing in Gozo

Online since: 09. April 2013

Mgarr on Gozo

Gozo has something to offer which Malta does not have. For example on one hand the Azure Window, a naturally formed arch on the coast. On the other hand the capital Victoria with the small romantic lanes and the large bastions, from which one has an excellent view of the whole of Gozo and parts of Malta and Comino. Then there is the beautiful beach, the Ramla Bay, and the historical temples of Ggantija. In addition the flair of the island and the inhabitants is a completely different one than in Malta.

Following is a list with the most interesting locations in Gozo:

Golden BayAzure Window in Gozo

The Azure Window lies in the west of the island of Gozo. It is a nature made gateway/window. The surrounding area is also quite nice. You will have a nice view on the sea and the cliffs, especially nice during sunset. Besides the main attraction there is a small café and some other food/sweet/drink sellers.

On the small hill there is an old church. Behind it there is a small valley with an inbound sea, which is connected to the sea. You can make a small boat trip through the grottos and to the azure window.

To get there is a bit difficult, because the buses Gozo don’t follow a very regular schedule as in Malta.

This sign gives a warning to cross the artificial bridge: "Danger - Do not proceed beyond this point!"

Golden BayRamla Bay in Gozo - the most beautiful sandy beach on the island

The most beautiful bay with the best sandy beach in Gozo is the Ramla Bay. The red sand is very fine and the water is highly transparent. The bay lies in a valley and surrounded from both sides by hills. On one of the hill there is a small Grotto. During the High season summer months the bay is full with tourists and Maltese. Alongside the bay there are some kiosks and Snack bars/Cafes.

Golden BayVictoria (Rabat) - ’capital’ of Gozo and the citadel (fortification)

Victoria (Rabat) is the capital of Gozo. Known as Rabat (Arabic name) the city received its English name from the British commander of the island petrol Bavarian, in honor of the 50th year throne anniversary of the British queen Victoria in 1987, thus the victorious one. The city is now officially called Victoria, but in the vernacular it is still called Rabat.

Victoria has a number of inhabitants of 6000 and is thereby the largest city in Gozo.

From here one also has a beautiful view over the entire island. One can even see the neighbor island of Comino. The fortress accommodated government and law courts, prison, cathedral and houses. Well preserved is the cathedral with the bishop palace. It stands magnificently behind the main gate entrance. The cathedral is the work of Lorenzo Gafa, who also planned the magnificent cathedral in Mdina.

All bus routes on the island lead into this city. The city is situated in the centre of Gozo and the bus route system is mapped out after a star system.
