Cart Ruts in Malta

Online since: 09. April 2013

Prehistoric cuts in the limestone that look like cart ruts can be found all over Malta, particularly along the south coast, near the Dingli Cliffs and Hagar Qim. As no proven explanation for them has yet been found, these ruts remain one of Malta’s biggest mysteries. Some theories say they could be cart ruts, dragging marks, an irrigation system or remains of temple construction. However, the ruts are not close to any temple, nor do they run consistently parallel, and they do not form any kind of perceptible network. The mystery of the cart ruts may or may not be solved one day, but it is definitely worth having a look and speculating about their origin yourself.
